Stepping into the studio (and out of my comfort zone)

A full-circle moment.

In partnership with

Hey friend,

Talk about a blast from the past! Last week, I stepped back into the TV studio for the first time since I shifted away from news broadcasting over a year ago. The day was brimming with nostalgia—glamming up with a full face of makeup, carefully selecting a "non-distracting" outfit (yes, the TV anchor wardrobe is a real challenge, folks!), and feeling those familiar flutters in my stomach. 🦋

Being surrounded by the familiar hustle of the newsroom, the incessant radio scanners, and walls lined with TV screens stirred so many memories. But this time, I wasn't there to deliver the news; I was there to share my story.

This NBC4 interview was a pivotal opportunity to open up about my career journey. And honestly? It felt a little scary! But I knew it was time to embrace transparency about my pivot—the reasons behind it, the precise moments that catalyzed change, and most crucially, how I navigated the transition.

To prep for my close-up, I did my usual nighttime skincare routine, which, admittedly, is a bit extra. 😂 This time, I added a night mask for some serious moisture and rejuvenation. You gotta keep the skin glowing, especially under those bright lights and HD cameras. 🎬

Robert offered his usual words of encouragement: "Don't be nervous!" (Easier said than done, babe!) He also helped me practice by asking me a few questions. It was a nice change of pace; I'm usually the one asking questions, not answering them.

And because I know from my anchoring days that sleepless nights usually mean stumbling over my words (no amount of caffeine can fix that!), I made sure to get plenty of sleep.

Shortly after announcing my departure, my DMs, emails, and comments were inundated with questions about how I managed it. That's when it hit me: so many of us are at a crossroads, paralyzed by fear or indecision. I aim to simplify this process for others and encourage them to feel the fear and do it anyway. For me, fear wasn’t a sign that I was making the wrong decision, but that I was stepping outside my comfort zone.

Now, I'm finally ready to share every detail, hoping to inspire anybody else who’s contemplating a similar leap.

During the interview, I reflected on the long journey to my ultimate decision and the unexpected challenges I've encountered along the way. One thing that really caught me off guard was the whole time management thing. It's something I continue to grapple with every single day.

Switching from a “regular job” to being my own boss has totally blurred the lines between work and life. I’m building my main business from the ground up while simultaneously creating other income streams, and finding a work-life balance feels impossible sometimes, especially with constant ideas for content. Also, I completely underestimated how much time I'd need to put in at the beginning to build a strong base for the future.

Pro tip: if you're thinking about making your own pivot, it's important to understand the time and money you'll need to invest upfront. It's not always a walk in the park, but it's definitely worth it!

The inspiration behind The Pivot Playbook also made its way into our conversation. I delved into what the playbook offers and how it can guide you through your own transformative journeys. I like to think of it as your personal roadmap to navigating change and creating a life you really, actually love.

I've gotten so much more confident since I quit broadcasting. At first, I was hesitant to talk about changing careers because I didn't want to fail—what if I took the leap and fell flat on my face? But now I realize that the only way to really fail is to not try for what matters to you.

Stepping back into the studio was surprisingly therapeutic. I didn't have that knot of anxiety I used to get when I was an anchor, always anticipating breaking news. This time, it was just me, sharing my story, and connecting with people on a deeper level. It was a full-circle moment that reminded me of how far I've come.

It was also a trip down memory lane! I actually interviewed at this same station years ago, hoping to move back from Philly to DC to be closer to my husband. It didn't work out—Philly gave me a promotion to anchor, so I stayed. This time around, I got a tour of the station since they did a massive renovation, and it was so cool to see the changes.

I'm so excited for you all to see the interview, which will air in a few days. (Stay tuned for the link!) And if you're considering your own pivot, or simply curious about the process, make sure to join The Pivot Playbook waitlist!

Here's to sharing our stories and supporting each other through life’s transitions.
