Staycation mode: all rest, no jet lag
My new approach to work/life balance.

Hey friend,
I love a good staycation, and whew, I needed one. SO. BADLY.
My husband and I spent the weekend at the St. Gregory Hotel in DC—just the two of us. It was pure bliss. We slept in, had real conversations (not just about whose turn it was to empty the dishwasher), and remembered what it felt like to be a couple, rather than roommates who co-parent and occasionally co-work. It was incredible to finally slow down, recharge, and most importantly, reconnect with each other.
You know how we're always talking about that elusive work/life balance? Well, lately I've realized that it's less about finding the "perfect" balance (spoiler alert: it doesn't exist!) and more about striving for small wins. Even a glimpse of balance can feel like winning the lottery to me.
Between managing the newsletter, launching the podcast, juggling brand partnerships, and handling family responsibilities, some days my commute is to the kitchen table; on others, it’s across the country. And if you work from home, you know the struggle is real—it can be pretty tough to “punch out,” especially when you're passionate about what you do. Although Robert and I have been spending more time together than ever since he started working from home in July, true quality time has been harder to come by. It’s funny how easy it is to get caught up in the day-to-day. |
That’s why our weekend together was so special. The autumn weather was perfect for strolling through Georgetown. We had a leisurely lunch at Clyde’s, did some damage at Sephora (I couldn’t resist—see one of my buys below), and enjoyed the most delicious Afro-Caribbean dinner at Dōgon. It's one of the hottest new restaurants in DC, and the owner, Chef Kwame, was so gracious. He came and chatted with us for a bit. I know you’re wondering, so: we had the Coco Bread, Grilled Wagyu Short Rib, and Hoe Crab (10/10, no notes). And the next morning? Breakfast in bed, baby! ☕️ 🥐
It was actually a conversation with Mona that gave me the Oprah “Aha” moment. She’d just come back from a week-long getaway in the countryside with her husband. I was totally inspired by how intentional they were about their time together. This weekend was like our mini-version of that, and it was just as impactful.
Our staycation made Robert and I realize that even though we can't always jet off for a whole weekend, we can make those "just us" moments a bigger priority. Consistency is key, so we've made a pact: Wednesday lunch dates are officially a thing now, and we're going to sneak in regular coffee shop outings to break up the workday and reconnect.
Can you relate? Finding balance is a universal challenge—we’re all juggling work, relationships, and personal passions. And I know you're busy too, so here's my nugget of wisdom for the week: Don't wait for the perfect moment to connect with the people you love.
Think of someone you’ve been meaning to reach out to. Planning a full day to catch up might feel overwhelming with your packed schedule, so start with small, intentional efforts. Grab a coffee, go for a walk, hop on a quick call, send a goofy meme—just carve out that time. Those little moments matter so much.
What are your favorite ways to connect with loved ones amidst the chaos?
Sending you lots of love and balanced vibes!

Shop one of my fave outfits from the weekend (I’m really feeling these camo pants right now!).
It’s entirely possible to get bouncy, romantic curls without frying your hair. I’ve sworn by this heatless hack for years.
I made a small tweak to my morning routine, and it’s changed everything. More to come in next week’s letter!
