Quit happens: pulling back the curtain on my Big Career Pivot

When you know, you know.

Hey there,

Welcome to This Just In! I’m happy you’re here. TJI is your weekly dose of inspiration, delivered with a side of real-life stories, recommendations, and actionable advice. This is a space where we celebrate bold moves and the courage to create your own path, because life's too short to stay stuck. More to come on this—but first, some updates.

September was a total whirlwind. From shooting a beauty commercial and being honored at Color Vision's Creator Summit, to attending the US Open, NYFW, and the White House Black Excellence Brunch, it's been a month of firsts! I also hit a major milestone on my current professional journey: launching a podcast, Awf the Record.

The response has been overwhelmingly positive, and we’ve gained 30K downloads and 50K followers in just weeks.

It's clear there's a hunger for real, transparent conversations, and I'm so proud of the community we're building.

Awf the Record is like having a weekly heart-to-heart with your besties (who also happen to be seasoned journalists). ☕️

Recently, my co-host Mona Kosar Abdi and I tackled a topic close to our hearts: the Big Career Pivot.

Mona and I have both walked away from jobs we absolutely loved, jobs that opened doors we never imagined. We've questioned our paths, wrestled with fear, and ultimately bounced.

When we opened the group chat to listeners, we were flooded with questions about pivoting. When's the right time? How do you prepare? What does your gut say? Fear can be loud, but what's it really telling you?

So, we spilled the tea on the three things we did before walking away. I got personal: my pivot from FOX 5 Washington DC anchor to full-time content creator was years in the making. Seriously, I wasn't just thinking about plan B, but plans C, D, Y, and Z. I also explain why everyone needs a "cabinet," how my husband reacted when I quit (plot twist: he eventually quit too!), and the one thing I never do after a big decision.

If you're at a crossroads or wondering if it's time to bet on yourself...well, I’ve got you. I’m talking to the dreamers, the doers, the visionaries on the brink who are ready to break through and own their next chapter.

As an avid storyteller, it’s always going to be important to me to relate and activate. I'm here to remind you: You’re allowed to pivot. You’re allowed to change. You’re allowed to evolve. Life will test you to see if you know your purpose. It's up to you to pay attention to those nudges along the way.

For me, it was when I found myself having to turn down opportunities that were more aligned with my true self than my broadcasting career was. I knew deep down that I wanted the chance to do me, even if it required giving up the dream job I made a reality. And here I am today, discussing the topic in my very own newsletter—a powerful pivot in itself.

Here's my biggest takeaway, sis: Always be creating options. Even a "break glass in case of emergency" pivot can be your leverage.

Have you pivoted in your career? What made you take the leap?

Again, thanks for joining me. Stay tuned for more real talk. We're just getting started!
